Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, first female Head of State in Africa and former Liberian president, has joined ‘The Elders’, a group of former world leaders tasked with ensuring global peace and universal human rights.
Formed by the late Nelson Mandela in 2007, the group uses their collective experience and influence to engage with global leaders and civil society at all levels to resolve conflict, challenge injustice, and promote ethical leadership and good governance.
Upon her appointment, Johnson Sirleaf said:
I look forward to working with The Elders to inspire people everywhere, particularly women and girls, to reach for their true potential, break through barriers, and pursue their dreams.
