2021 Amujae Leader Anne Waiguru was ranked Kenya’s second-best governor based on her performance during the past year, according to a recently-released report.
Research firm Mizani Africa surveyed 47,000 constituents across Kenya’s 47 counties to determine the ranking of the country’s top governors, Members of Parliament, and Members of County Assemblies (MCAs). Between March–December 2020, respondents were asked about their perception of their representatives’ performances over the last year.
Ms. Waiguru, who currently serves as Governor of Kirinyaga County, scored an approval rating of 79.4%, coming in closely behind Onesmus Muthomi Njuki, Governor of Tharaka Nithi County, who received the highest score of 79.7%. Notably, of the seven governors who made the list, Ms. Waiguru was the only woman.
Ms. Waiguru was elected to her seat in 2017, becoming one of only three women governors in Kenya. Four months later she made history by being the first woman elected as Vice Chair of the Council of Governors. So far during her tenure, Ms. Waiguru has worked to advance healthcare, infrastructure, and women’s equal representation.
