Launch of the Amujae Initiative
Launched on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2020, the vision for the Amujae Initiative is to shift the landscape for women in public leadership in Africa, moving from a culture of tokenism to one that truly values women leaders.
“Such a place – a sense of true belonging – is something that I never had.”
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf at the Inauguration of the Amujae Initiative.

COVID-19 pandemic begins

“The realization that the economic costs of a pandemic can be huge, far surpassing investments in research and prevention…”
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, EJS Center Board Member, Nigeria

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on women. Firstly, the majority of caregivers and health workers in Africa are women, thereby exposing
many of them to the risks… and enabling stigma. Economically, given the high population of women
in the informal sector, most of them were the
first to lose their jobs. The COVID-19
lockdowns had a big impact in terms of
uptakes in gender-based violence.”
Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, World Health Organization (WHO)

The lessons from my fellow Amujae Leaders were so thoughtful and rooted in experience, that I was able to begin drafting my first [COVID-19] response while still in Liberia [during the 2020 Amujae Leadership Forum, Liberia]. I learned from them that engaging local communities would help them to protect themselves and
build the resilience needed to respond.
Blen A. Sahilu, Amujae Leader, Ethiopia

Spotlight a COVID-19 Heroine
Whether they work in healthcare, activism, civil service, education, or the arts, African women were at the forefront of pandemic responses in communities across the continent. Demonstrating strong leadership and a commitment to delivering positive change, these twelve women were nominated to feature in the EJS Center’s latest initiative, “Spotlight a COVID-19 heroine”.
