Nine out of ten jobs in the future will require digital skills, and this should be “a wake-up call for all of us,” said Amujae Leader and Deputy Minister for Institutional Development Ghada Labib, when presenting Egypt’s innovative digital transformation strategy at this month’s Africa Tech Festival 2021.

During the presentation Ms. Labib shared that aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and Africa’s 2063 Agenda, “Egypt, in 2016, embarked upon a bold sustainable development strategy – called Vision 2030 – targeting three dimensions: social, economic, and environmental.” 

A focus on redeveloping the Egyptian ICT sector began in 2018 with investments from government institutions, digital government service reforms, and infrastructure upgrades aided by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology’s ‘Digital Egypt’ campaign launched in 2019, said Ms. Labib. By modernizing the industry, Egypt is boosting its capabilities and digital inclusion, creating “a national transformational journey where all government institutions collaborate in harmony and employ a holistic approach,” with the end goal of a “secure and interactive digital society… laying the foundations for the transformation.”

Ms. Labib noted that this work includes projects aimed at Egyptian citizens living in rural areas, who represent 58% of the population. Ms. Labib explained that these innovations are aimed at creating public value through access to government information:

“Egypt has been adopting a robust strategy and strong course of action in transforming the existing government services and community ecosystem to an entirely digital and data-driven ecosystem to provide public services in a faster and simpler way.”

Ms. Labib also highlighted the Digital Transformation of the General Authority for Health Care, “considered one of the largest national projects in health care history.” This project aims to have Universal Health Insurance for all citizens by 2030. Creating a ‘top to bottom’ digital approach, used in schools, work, and youth initiatives. 

Egypt aims to make digital progression inclusive for all, demonstrating the critical impact technology has across the infrastructure of society.
